Newbie for airsofting, what to do?

I'm new to airsoft, i dont have a gun, but my friends do. I dont know ANYTHING about airsoft guns and i need to know a couple things about it. first, whats a good fps for them? should i get a spring, gas, or eletric one? (i want it to hurt when i shoot them, but not bleeding) should i get one offline? i think i want something like a rifle, and i also live in CARLSBAD, CA, where are the local shops for airsoft?
