Why does an ageing population present a serious problem in the developed world?

Basics of economics - law of supply and demand - the elderly require higher levels of medical, medicines, person caretakers, and special housing. There are also going to be a higher number of elderly than ever before, due to baby boomers retiring. There are fewer younger individuals paying into a governmental system that is receiving even more financial stress on it than ever before. During the last three years, they have not even seen a cost of living raise in their checks, so special programs to help with utility bills are also drying up. Hope this helps.
